Six nurses, members of NYSNA and Dr. Michael Touger just returned from the Bahamas after four days of Medical Mission at the Great Abaco Island.
Hurricane Dorian first hit the Abaco Islands as a Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds. That ties it for the strongest landfall on record.
Our team’s mission was to keep the only Clinic on the island working, located on Marsh Harbor. The Clinic functioned as an emergency department, and our team was the sole provider on the island, working in shifts of eight hours. During the full four days, they provided health care to 110 patients with all levels of acuity. To see the video of our disaster relief in the Bahamas, click here.
They also visited the nearby islands of Hope Town, Morris Island, and Guana Cay to check on patients.
Many patients were responders that are still sorting through the wreckage, particularly in poor Haitian immigrant communities in Great Abaco, that was almost completely leveled.
